The full moon in May, known as the flower moon, will appear in the sky Thursday morning, the fourth and final supermoon of the year, according to the loose definition of the term.
According to NASA, the term “supermoon” originated in 1979 in reference to any full or new moon that occurs within 90% of perigee, the closest point to Earth in the moon’s orbit. That makes the full moon appear slightly larger and brighter, though most casual observers probably won’t notice a difference.
Some definitions are more strict, but NASA says that the February snow moon, March worm moon, April pink moon and May flower moon all meet the 90% criteria.
